CSL Ship Draftsman Trainee Recruitment 2026 : Educational Qualification
Applicants must fulfil the following educational criteria for both disciplines:
For Ship Draftsman Trainee (Mechanical):
- Pass in SSLC (10th Standard), and
- A 3-year Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from a State Board of Technical Education, with at least 60% marks, along with an aptitude for draftsmanship and working knowledge of CAD software.
For Ship Draftsman Trainee (Electrical):
- Pass in SSLC (10th Standard), and
- A 3-year Diploma in Electrical Engineering from a State Board of Technical Education, with at least 60% marks, along with an aptitude for draftsmanship and working knowledge of CAD software.
Important qualification-related points:
- The diploma must be recognised by AICTE or an equivalent statutory/State/Central authority.
- Candidates with equivalent qualifications must submit an Equivalency Certificate; otherwise their application will not be entertained.
- Higher qualifications like B.Tech or M.Sc. cannot be substituted for the prescribed diploma — such candidates will not be considered eligible.
- Where a candidate’s result is in CGPA/grade points instead of percentage, the conversion formula defined by the respective board/university will be used. If no such formula exists, the grade points will simply be multiplied by 10 to arrive at the percentage.
- Candidates already working as Ship Draftsman Trainees on CSL’s rolls are not eligible to apply again.
CSL Ship Draftsman Trainee Recruitment 2026 : Selection Process
Unlike many government recruitments that use a written exam, CSL has opted for a skill-based Practical Test to judge candidates directly on the job requirement.
- Selection Mode: Practical Test worth 100 marks
- Test Format: Candidates will be required to prepare a technical drawing using CAD software at the test venue in Kochi.
- Qualifying Marks:
- Unreserved (UR) & EWS candidates: 50%
- OBC candidates: 45%
- SC/ST candidates: 40%
- CSL may lower the qualifying marks further if an insufficient number of candidates clear the cut-off.
- Only those candidates whose documents pass the eligibility scrutiny will be permitted to appear for the Practical Test.
- The final rank list will be prepared purely on the marks scored in the Practical Test. In case of a tie, the older candidate (by age) will be given preference.
- The prepared rank list remains valid for 18 months from the date the last selected candidate joins, and CSL may use it to fill future vacancies within that period.
CSL Ship Draftsman Trainee Recruitment 2026 : Documents Required
While filling the online application, keep the following documents ready in scanned format for upload:
- SSLC (10th) certificate as proof of age
- Diploma certificate and mark sheets (proof of educational qualification)
- Equivalency Certificate (only if your qualification is not an exact match to the notified one)
- Community/Caste certificate for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates, issued by a Revenue Authority not below the rank of Tahsildar
- Income and Asset Certificate for EWS candidates, issued by a competent authority as specified in the notification
- A recent passport-size colour photograph
Applications that miss any of these mandatory uploads are liable to be rejected outright, so double-check everything before final submission.
CSL Ship Draftsman Trainee Recruitment 2026 : Stipend / Pay During Training
Selected candidates will undergo training for two years, and will be paid a monthly stipend during this period:
| Training Year | Monthly Stipend |
|---|---|
| First Year | ₹14,000 |
| Second Year | ₹20,000 |
Trainees will also be paid separately for any extra hours worked beyond normal duty hours.
A few points worth noting about the training and post-training scenario:
- Continuation into the second year of training depends on satisfactory performance in a year-end evaluation.
- After successful completion of training, CSL may (at its discretion) offer contractual engagement for up to 5 years, subject to vacancy availability and organisational need — this is not an automatic or guaranteed regular appointment.
- The training itself involves visiting shop floors, dry docks, and under-construction ships, which requires climbing ladders and working in confined spaces. Because of this physically demanding nature of work, the post has not been identified for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD).
