MECL will shortlist candidates in a multi-stage process:
Stage 1 – Screening of Applications
Applications submitted online are screened by a Screening Committee, and candidates are marked “Eligible” or “Not Eligible” based on the details filled in the online form.
Stage 2 – Written Test (100% Weightage)
The written examination is conducted at Nagpur by an independent external agency notified under the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024. Category-wise cut-off marks are:

Stage 3 – Document Verification
Candidates clearing the written test are called for document verification, ordinarily in a ratio of up to 1:7 against the number of vacancies, based on merit.
Stage 4 – Skill Test / Trade Test (Qualifying in Nature)
Candidates cleared in document verification appear for a Skill/Trade Test, which only classifies candidates as “Suitable” or “Not Suitable.” It does not carry marks toward the final merit list.
Final Merit List
The final merit list is prepared strictly on the basis of written test marks, after eliminating candidates found “Not Suitable” in the skill/trade test.
